Each member of our staff has attained a minimum of a bachelor's degree in kinesiology or a related field. Whether your goal is to improve your technique, rehabilitate, or learn to skate, our staff are there to provide you with the knowledge and direction you require to insure that your training or rehabilitation is done in a safe and effective manner.

However, it's not just expertise and professionalism that set our staff apart. All of our staff are or have been intimately involved in the game of hockey. Their enthusiasm makes training in our facility a personally rewarding experience. Not only will you be physically prepared, you will also be confident in your abilities when it comes time to use them.

Kelly Lockwood - Associate Professor & Sport Scientist

Kelly Lockwood

Dr. Kelly Lockwood is the President and Lead Scientist of The Skating Lab Inc. She is also an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Education & Kinesiology at Brock University. Dr. Lockwood has been working with athletes for over 25 years. Her extensive experience in Sport Biomechanics, Exercise Physiology and High Performance Athletic Development has been blended into the proprietary training programs offered by The Skating Lab. This experience and expertise provides each Skating Lab participant with optimal assessment utilities and training methodologies for any on-ice sport.

Eric Walter - Bachelor of Kinesiology (Manager)

Eric Walter

Eric Walter graduated from Brock University with a Bachelor of Kinesiology (June, 2010). Eric is avid hockey player himself, playing since age 5 and still participating in recreational leagues during his spare time. In addition to playing hockey, Eric considers himself a multi-sport athlete, participating in badminton, football, and freestyle wrestling at both the high school and club level. Eric exercises his passion for sport and fitness and is also certified through CPTN as a personal trainer (2007). In addition to one-on-one training with clients, Eric has also organized and instructed several youth camps at Brock University directed toward athletic performance. Training with athletes of a young age is what I am most passionate about.

Phil Knapp - Bachelor of Kinesiology

Phil Knapp

Philip Knapp graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology from York University in 2006. While at York, he played five seasons for the York Yeomen/Lions men's varsity hockey team and was an alternate captain his final two seasons with the program. During his fourth year with the team Phil was selected to represent Canada at the 2005 Winter Universiade held in Innsbruck, Austria as a member of the Men's Hockey Team. Prior to university he had also spent time in the OHL with the Mississauga IceDogs and later in the OPJHL with the Kingston Voyageurs. Currently Phil is pursuing a Doctor of Chiropractics degree at Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College.

Steven Piper - Bachelor of Kinesiology

Steven Piper

Steven Piper graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Brock University in 2007. While at Brock, Steven was the Strength and Conditioning Coach for both the Men's and Women's Varsity Hockey Teams and completed a 4th year thesis studying the Degree of Separation in Hockey Players. In addition, Steve spent three years as a student therapist also with the Men's Varsity Hockey team. He is presently pursuing a Doctor of Chiropractics degree at Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College.

Mike Popovic - Bachelor of Kinesiology

Michael Popovic graduated with a Bachelor of Kinesiology from McMaster University in 2005. He is currently pursuing his Doctor of Chiropractics degree at Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College. He has trained many hockey athletes of all ages and levels through summer hockey training programs. Mike was also the head coach of a travelling summer hockey team. His experience, knowledge and dedication to the game of hockey is what he brings to the Skating Lab. He has played hockey at the Junior level and has personally benefited from the treadmill training program. He is excited to work at the Skating Lab and help the young athletes of today develop into the future stars of tomorrow.

Erin Quinn - Bachelor of Physical Education

Erin Quinn

Erin Quinn graduated from Brock University with a Bachelor of Physical Education. While attending Brock University, Erin played for Brock Badgers, the women's Varsity hockey team and was named captain during the '05-'06 season. During that season she also had the opportunity to play with the Brampton Thunder in the National Women's Hockey League. In 2007, Erin graduated from the University of Western Ontario's Faculty of Education and is currently working in the Toronto District School Board. She continues to exercise her passion for hockey and youth athleticism working with us at the Skating Lab.

Shannon Weeks - Bachelor of Kinesiology

Shannon Weeks

Shannon Weekes graduated from Brock University with a Bachelor of Kinesiology in 2006. Her fourth year thesis examined changes in stride rate versus stride length over an eight week skating treadmill training program in male pee wee hockey players. Shannon brings to the lab coaching, teaching and playing experience. She was the head coach of a Novice 'BB' girls hockey team and has taught learn-to-skate programs. Shannon played ringette for six years before making the switch to competitive hockey. Last year she was a member of the Senior 'AA' provincial champion St. Catharines Jets. She enjoys coaching and motivating players, don't let her quiet voice fool you.

Andrew Winchester - Bachelor of Kinesiology & Master of Science

Andrew Winchester

Andrew Winchester has just completed an MSc at Brock University that examined the interaction between skate blade radius of hollow and on-ice performance. He has been engaged in hockey research for the past five years, while also training hockey players of all ages on the treadmill during that time. Andrew is currently working on a Bachelor of Education at the University of Toronto.

Rodney Winchester - Bachelor of Recreation & Leisure Studies

Rodney Winchester

Rodney Winchester comes to us with a long history of involvement in hockey. He has played for a total of 23 years including five years at the Junior level, two years of Senior Men AAA and two years of Varsity with Brock University. He continues to play in various leagues around the Toronto area. He has been an opponent of, taken and stopped shots, against such players as Rick Viave and Peter Zezel. Beyond his playing experience, Rodney has worked with Hockey Opportunity Camps coordinating their Leadership in Training. Throughout high school he was recognized for many of his sporting achievements, as both 4th year male athlete of the year, plus Playoff MVP during his first year in Junior Hockey. Rodney's desire to work within the sport industry, and more specifically in hockey, makes him a valuable member of our team. He has had five years of experience working commercially in the sports industry, including a period with the preeminent sporting goods company, NIKE. Rodney graduated from Sheridan College (1999) in Police Education and has a degree from Brock University (2004) in Recreation and Leisure Studies.
